Images are the most painful aspect of web views regardless of the language and the underlying framework. More than 50% of payload is images and modern web views require more and more images of higher and higher quality. Is there a way to cut the image payload and subsequently cut seconds off page load time, improve SEO, reduce bounce rates, and most importantly, increase revenues? The PICTURE element in HTML is a possible answer but it makes the image development process convoluted as you must take care of multiple copies of the same image and perform manual calculation of ideal breakpoints. A better option is using device detection and some server-side optimization algorithm that can resize images on the fly to the proper device size, resolution and image format.
